How I failed at email marketing
And embarrassed myself along the way
5 years ago I was running my own Shopify online store.
We sold clothing and gear for campers.
In our first six months we saw $200k in sales.
We doubled growth by the end of the first year.
But things started to head south.
Meta AdSpend ROAS was dropping, and everyone kept telling me I needed professional email marketing.
I had nothing.
So I found an agency that told me they could get me huge results.
And I paid them $1500 upfront.
To build our entire email marketing system, campaigns, flows, popups etc.
Six weeks later, I was in shock with their first draft.
I thought: Did I accidentally hire someone's young nephew?
The emails looked like they were made in 2003, terrible fonts, low res images, and copy that sounded like a robot wrote it.
And ChatGPT wasn’t a thing back then.
We still launched!
Made just under $200 in sales.
I was so embarrassed as I told my business partner this was going to increase numbers.
So I ended our contract there and decided to take things up on my own.
I spent a few hundred hours on Youtube watching everything Klaviyo.
Thousands of courses, and eventually found a mentor, Dan Hurt.
He showed me 10+ Shopify accounts he had scaled with Email.
All in the 6-7 figures a month range.
That was good enough for me.
So I learned everything he would teach me.
I rebuilt all our popups, automations and learned to execute campaign strategy.
He tripled the email list from 32k subs to 110k over those next 6 months!
Over $55k / mo in sales just from emails and SMS.
That changed everything for us.
That year I got an offer by a much bigger company to sell.
And we did.
That’s the moment I decided to start helping others do what I did.
And massively grow their business with email marketing.
